Well, April has definitely not disappointed it's reputation. We had a few weeks of Spring weather and then we got some cold rainy/snowy weather again. Even though the weathers nothing to brag about, these floor to ceiling windows overlooking Coventry lake still make us smile. We're crossing our fingers that May flowers will be right around the corner.
We just completed our first home in Long Lake Pines and our new homeowners will be moving in any day now. We're pretty pleased with how it turned out and can't wait to see how the other homes in Long Lake Pines are shaping up. Check out the glass walled stair case - that's one of our favorite features.
Yes, the amazing Michigan Wolverines are on my mind today. But I have to update our progress of the last couple of weeks. It is not that things aren’t happening, because they certainly are. It is just that the scope is big and the pictures I can show you don’t do them justice. The painters have been in the house the better part of the last two weeks and now that they have finished the interior and removed the masking tape, paper and visqueen I can show you some pictures:
This shelving with lots of cubbys for storage, a seat and bead board back was custom built on the job by our carpenters and expertly painted by our painters to a beautiful finish.
In the lower level, the owner decided to install an IKEA Kitchen. It came in 104 boxes and, fortunately for him, Ikea has contractors that assemble and install their stuff. I think it came out pretty nice!
To the right is a look at the lower level open great room. With its high ceilings and doors and moldings the same as the upstairs it is truly first class space even though this home does not have a even a partial walkout to let in outside light.
As the weather improves we will be back outside doing landscaping, sprinklers and sod along with exterior touch ups and finishing our concrete and asphalt work. So we are definitely in the Final Four weeks here!
Introducing our Project Manager, Russ. He became part of the Nosan Signature team about a month ago. Russ is a skilled carpenter and has a keen eye for detail and quality. He has been involved in this job for some time on a part time basis but is now with us full time. Russ agreed to come on board even though he knew first hand how picky I am. I guess that’s because he’s pretty picky too!
Under Russ’ watchful eye the finish carpenters built some cubbys with seating, hanging and shoe storage in the mud room, built some nice dadoe molding and panel details for the library, rebuilt the stairs with beautiful cherry treads and installed the front entry door and a lot of crown molding
The drywallers have done all of their touch ups.The tile contractors have set most of the tile in our five full bathrooms (two of them with electrically heated floors) and back hall areas.
And the painters have carefully prepared all the millwork and walls and ceilings for their finish coats.
Because we sweat the details on the front end things tend to come together pretty well now with very few surprises. That’s the way it’s supposed to be but it doesn’t just happen. It takes folks like Russ to make it happen.
Oh yeah – He’s a Wolverine too! Go Blue!

Now it gets even more interesting. Liz generated perspective drawings from various angles for each layout. Here are two from just about the same point of view – one of each version of the kitchen.
So there it is! The carpenter is coming and we need to decide. Which way would you go? Let us hear from you with your choice and why you chose it.
Between the mid-week 4th of July Holiday, the storms, heat and humidity, not much got done on site this week. But no fear, there is always planning and research. We all know how hard it is sometimes to decide what we want in our own home but when we are building a speculative home and trying to design for a future homeowner we haven’t even met yet, the anxiety level can get pretty high. When we start committing to walls, cabinets, countertops, tile and plumbing fixtures we are always leaning toward the thing that is most appealing (or least offensive) to the most people! Sure, we have the opinions of our architect, friends, prospective customers, our sales people and the contractors that are working on Our Home, all of whom see what’s most popular in the projects they have worked on recently. In the end, it falls to us, the builders, to make the call. The buck stops here with and mistakes can cost us big bucks!
An example this week is the kitchen LAYOUT – we haven’t even gotten to door styles, colors, moldings and hardware yet – this is just the layout. Our architect designed a kitchen that is open to the Dining and Family Rooms. These are large spaces about 22′ deep and 26′ long with 12′ high ceilings. The open kitchen that was designed has a 10′ high ceiling and two islands – a work island with sink and dishwasher and a buffet/casual dining island adjacent to the dining room. Here is what he drew:
This is a reflection of the trend toward open floor plans. But Our Home has a first floor master bedroom that should appeal to either empty nesters or families with kids in their early to late teens. I got to thinking that these folks may want to entertain in a more formal manner from time to time – they may even have food preparation and servers working from this kitchen. Do they really want their guests to see all of this? There also seemed to me to be a dearth of cabinets. And this is a big house with a breakfast area so the owners won’t need to sit at a counter to eat. So I sketched an alternative to this kitchen that puts a wall between the kitchen and dining room, allows for more cabinets and creates a space for a buffet or serving shelf in the dining room. Here it is, my changes are hi lighted in yellow:
I took the plan and my sketch to a Certified Kitchen Designer that works for our cabinet supplier. Liz liked the wall idea too. She sells cabinets so of course she feels more are needed – just kidding Liz :-) . Now she will determine where the sink and appliances should all go and what types of cabinets to put where. She will make sure the kitchen works well for our future homeowners and that it is an asset in helping us close the sale.
